Former Celtic star has Kris Commons told the club’s decision-makers that there needs to be a January spend to bolster Neil Lennon’s squad, or they risk letting Rangers stop nine-in-a-row, writing in his Scottish Daily Mail column (30/12 print edition, Verdict supplement, page 16).
As we know, the Hoops suffered a damaging derby defeat yesterday that has prompted plenty of criticism and analysis of what’s currently going on at Celtic Park.
In the Glasgow goldfish bowl, a team is often only as good as their last game.
Neil Lennon and Scott Brown have both pointed to a brighter future in 2020, noting that the team have been consistent across three competitions so far this season.
However, there is a feeling that the squad needs a bit of refining over the winter break, with the January transfer window also providing a great opportunity to strengthen.
Commons thinks the need to spend is urgent, especially in attacking areas.
Writing in his Scottish Daily Mail column (30/12 print edition, Verdict supplement, page 16), he said: “Celtic need to spend in January and add more depth to the squad. Particularly up front, there’s an over-reliance on Edouard.
“There are too many passengers just now who aren’t contributing. You simply cannot afford that in a title race as tight as this.
“If the club doesn’t go and strengthen in January, then they’ll be playing with fire because I don’t see Rangers making a mess of things like they did 12 months ago.”

Have Celtic been complacent?
It should be stressed that Celtic have shown a real willingness to bring quality to the club, especially in the last transfer window. Christopher Jullien arrived for a sizable fee, while Mohamed Elyounoussi and Fraser Forster are likely to be earning a considerable wage.
Also bringing in Nick Hammond, who has reviewed and revamped our recruitment and scouting processes, the club is actually well placed to make significant moves in January.
As we’ve mentioned previously, the fact we’ve made trips around Europe to negotiate for two players already is a good sign that the money men are willing to flex Celtic’s financial muscles a bit next month.
There’s an argument to say we should be much further ahead of Rangers on the pitch than we are, but January could be the perfect opportunity to invest and secure more trophies next year.
