Lack of cover at full-back must be new Celtic manager’s top priority

The lack of full-backs on the books at Celtic has to be a top priority this summer. Currently we have just six recognised full-backs at the club. However, that number will decrease in the coming months with as many as four set to leave.

Jeremy Toljan will end a pretty awful six months by returning to his parent club Borussia Dortmund. There’s also speculation over long-term squad members Mikael Lustig, Emilio Izaguirre and Cristian Gamboa. The trio are all out of contract in June and unlikely to extend their stay.

That would leave just Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston at Celtic Park.

That’s hardly ideal with the former currently suffering from a pelvic injury and the latter largely out of favour.

Time to prioritise full-back

Last week, Neil Lennon revealed that signing another striker would be the priority this summer. We’ve spent well over £10million on forwards in the past year. It would make more sense to tackle a position in far greater need of repair.

Full-back is one of the few positions that Brendan Rodgers never really sorted. We were often exploited in that area by better quality sides in Europe. It is vital that the same doesn’t happen again next season.

The new manager must look to invest a good chunk of his transfer budget on a first-choice right-back. Also on the list should be a capable left-sided player who could take some of the heat away from Tierney.
