Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi reckons Celtic have “history on their side” as he discussed his team’s chances in Europa League Group E.

The Serie A side are bottom of the section after losing out to Cluj on matchday one but they know they could get their hopes back on track with a win over Rennes on Thursday. Speaking ahead of that clash, Inzaghi reckons that the group is a tough one for his side.

“It’s a complicated group,” he told press. (Daily Record)

“Cluj have played a lot of matches, and we’ve seen the Slavia Prague side that they played.

“Celtic and Rennes have history on their side. Celtic regularly win their league and Rennes beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup.”

Inzaghi comments on Celtic history are strange

If Inzaghi’s comments were that we have a winning mentality at the club then that’s fair enough. But his comments that we have European history over Lazio aren’t likely to wash with the majority of football fans.

The Italians have played in the group stage of the Europa League in six of the past eight seasons. They’ve advanced from their group on every occasions – three times as group winners and three times as runners-up. That record is far better than our Europa League showings which could be described as a mixed bag at best.

Thursday night’s game is a big one for Lazio. The ideal scenario for ourselves would be a draw between Lazio and Rennes and for us to take care of Cluj. That would put us top of the group and in with a good chance of making it to the last 32.
