Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi has stated his belief that racist supporters won’t be the topic of the day come full-time tonight.
The subject of racism has been in the press in recent times after England’s shocking match in Bulgaria. The game had to be halted twice, with monkey chants heard by the English players. It led to the Bulgarian FA president leaving his post.
Since then, more and more incidents of racist abuse have cropped up. Hearts have opened up investigations into a supporter who apparently racially abused Alfredo Morelos (BBC). Manchester United, meanwhile, are just off banning a fan for doing the same to a Liverpool player (BBC).

Lazio are also in the middle of a war with UEFA, who hit them with a partial stadium closure for racist behaviour against Rennes. But Simone, speaking at his press conference, stated in Gazzetta dello Sport that he doesn’t have any concerns over fan behaviour tonight.
“No. Every form of racism has always been fought by Lazio. Tomorrow there will be no problems. It will be a good game to live and play.”
Neil Lennon wants his players protected
Inzaghi’s comments come after Neil Lennon said this via the BBC:

“I have a duty of care to my players and I want them protected.
“They’re here to play football, it doesn’t matter what the colour of their skin is or what their background is. I’m hoping tomorrow is a celebration of football between two great clubs.
“In the main, I think Lazio have a great support. There are always a minority who want to overshadow the game, make noise for the wrong reasons or put a stain on the game.”
Supporters won’t be overly concerned about the prospect of racism rearing its ugly head tonight. With only 1,500 Lazio fans set to come to Parkhead, racist behaviour shouldn’t be a worry.

Instead, the only thing Celtic should be worrying about is coming out of the game with three points. We have a huge responsibility tonight to our supporters to put on a show.
Celtic also have to prove to themselves more than anyone that they can compete soundly at this level. Lazio will be the biggest challenge we will face in the group stage this season. Anything other than a win will put doubts into the players’ minds.
But even though it’s a hot topic, you can bet not one player will step onto the field tonight worried about racism. And that’s the way it should be.
