Ex-Serie A star Fabio Poli has had a bizarre dig at Celtic, and claimed that Lazio are “so superior” to Neil Lennon’s men.
Celtic face the Italians in matchday four of the Europa League tomorrow night. The onus is on Lazio to take the game to the Bhoys after our stunning 2-1 win at Parkhead two weeks ago.
Celtic had to seriously dig in on the night after facing periods of pressure and a 1-0 deficit against Simone Inzaghi’s side. But Inzaghi came out post-match and stated that the contest was one of Lazio’s best performances of the season (Football Italia).

But Poli, who played for them between 1985-97, provided a bizarre analysis of the two clubs. Speaking in comments picked up by LazioNews24, the former striker said the following:
“Lazio is so superior to Celtic. The Scots just run a lot. They play with such a relaxed attitude, they know they are poorer.
“Lazio must not give up. They have great strength and can do something beautiful.”
It’s clear that Poli doesn’t watch much of Celtic
Well hopefully Inzaghi listens to Poli as opposed to looking at Celtic himself. This is one of the most ridiculous observations of the Hoops you’re likely to hear this season.
“The Scots just run a lot” is a bizarre comment to make about Celtic. Sure, Neil Lennon’s side has great energy about it. The movement both on and off the ball shows just that. But Celtic are more than just a team of runners.

There’s some terrific technical ability and composure in this Celtic side. We wouldn’t have beaten Lazio at Celtic Park had we just been a team that moves around without much quality.
Some of Celtic’s attacking plays are tremendous to watch. Lennon has this side playing with some real confidence on the ball, and the fact they’re the highest scorers in Scotland proves it (SoccerStats).

Given the fact we play in Scotland, it’s not too much of a surprise to see Celtic underrated by a pundit predominately focused on one of the top five European leagues, we’re used to that. However, that doesn’t make the criticism any less out of touch.
But Lenny should stick these comments up on the dressing room wall tomorrow. Poli has only given us an added incentive to get a heroic result in Italy.
