Celtic Head of Recruitment Lee Congerton’s future is up in the air after the latest update from Brendan Rodgers.

Leicester City are currently on the lookout for a new recruitment chief themselves. Eduardo Macia left them to join Bordeaux. Therefore, the Foxes have been working without a Head of Recruitment for the last month.

It’s easy to link Congerton with Rodgers too. He’s the man the Northern Irishman brought to Celtic, and since then he’s been much-maligned. It was interesting to see Congerton stay when Rodgers left for Leicester. Macia, however, was of course still in the Leicester role at the time.

But, speaking in the Daily Record, Rodgers provided an update on Leicester’s search for a new head.

“There is still work going on behind the scenes and we have a number of recruitment staff still here compiling the list for the types of players, and then the club will hopefully soon appoint someone.

“The club is working very hard behind the scenes identifying the types of players we can bring in, but that is ongoing.

“The club will ask my opinion on it. I will always work with the club on identifying the talent and people coming in hopefully can bring the talent in, but ultimately it will be the decision of the club. But I am happy with that.”

“The decision of the club”

If the new Head of Recruitment at Leicester is a decision the club will make over Rodgers, that could put them off Congerton. After all, it’s Rodgers himself who likes Congerton, and he also defended the Celtic man from criticism before departing for Leicester.

At the same time, surely Leicester will consult Rodgers before making an appointment. It will be interesting to see if Congerton’s Celtic record will put Rodgers off going for him again.

The pair also worked together at Chelsea when Rodgers was the reserve-team coach and Congerton was chief scout. According to the Daily Record, Congerton has had his duds and successes at Celtic.

The Record believes he’s responsible for talents such as Odsonne Edouard, Timothy Weah, and Filip Benkovic. At the same time, he was apparently behind deals for Marvin Compper and Charly Musonda.

Congerton has been linked with opportunities in the past since Rodgers departed. But a move to Leicester would hardly be a surprise. If something was to be done, you have to imagine an announcement would be made before the summer transfer window.

But for now, the receruitment guru remains at Parkhead.
