Celtic prospect Lee O’Connor has impressed for the Republic of Ireland on his senior international debut.
O’Connor has even yet to make his debut in Neil Lennon’s team, but was selected by Mick McCarthy for tonight’s friendly against New Zealand in Dublin.
Starting as a right-back, the teenager was an energetic presence throughout, getting plenty of touches of the ball and supporting the Irish attack.
It was his stunning cross that allowed his side to score their third of the game in a 3-1 victory. An assist on your debut for Ireland isn’t a bad way to begin your career.
Having joined from Manchester United during the summer transfer window, hopes are high he has the quality and potential to eventually make a big impact at Celtic Park.

He’s a versatile defender, often playing as a centre-back in youth football. However, he looked every bit a right-back tonight.
Hopefully, it’s the kind of performance that gives him the confidence to push on and compete for places under Lennon. If not, there’s always the option of a January loan that allows him to get regular football.
