Celtic boss Neil Lennon has given Leigh Griffiths a big carrot as he stated more opportunities will follow if he gets sharper.

This should be a massive boost for the Celtic striker, who clocked 80 minutes tonight for the first time this season.

Griffiths’ goal against Ross County this evening adds to efforts vs St Johnstone, Aberdeen, Sparta Prague, and Hearts respectively. However, he had only made one start this season before tonight.

But Lennon has seemingly guaranteed him more game-time if he can continue to build his sharpness.

Speaking to the BBC after Celtic’s 2-0 win tonight (20:35), Lennon said: “Griff is never short of confidence. It’s a good 80 minutes into his legs and he could have had a hat-trick.

“He needs to get sharper and he’ll say ‘well, you need to play me’. I think the more he plays and stays fit he’ll be an asset for us going forward.”

Celtic striker should’ve done better

Fair play to Griff for getting on the scoresheet in the end. That was a big goal for him tonight, and he deserved it for his play. It was also a smashing goal too as he sent a glorious header back across goal and in at the far post.

However, it’s not the only goal Griffiths should’ve had. After a pretty anonymous first-half, he was given two glorious one-v-ones in the second. The first one he was sent through and saw his shot blocked when it looked easier to score. The second one he had all the time in the world with yet failed to bury. He also had team-mates alongside him looking for a square ball.

So Lennon does have a point. There’s plenty of sharpness that needs to come back to Griffiths’ game. He’s even better than what he showed tonight, and even then he still got a goal.

This is a massively tempting carrot for him from Lennon. He’s effectively saying to the Scotland international that if he continues to work hard, opportunities will come. With a massive game at Ibrox around the corner, what motivation.

Albian Ajeti also came on for the final 10 minutes this evening and barely made any sort of impact. So it’s fair to say that Griff is in a good position to make an appearance on Boxing Day at Hamilton.

Hopefully he takes it and makes it three goals in three games.
