Neil Lennon has once again moved to defend his Celtic record after yet more dropped points last night.
Celtic failed to make one of their three games in-hand count at Livingston. The Tony Macaroni hasn’t been kind to us over the last three years and it proved so again in a disappointing 2-2 draw.
The result leaves Lennon’s side an absolutely stupendous 20 points behind our rivals in our most important season since 1997/98. However, that hasn’t stopped the manager from continuously reflecting on his treble success against Hearts last month.
And he brought it up again last night in his post-match interviews. Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Lennon again refused the opportunity to look at things as they are:
“No, I won’t walk away, no. Absolutely not. I’ve put too much into this – it’s my life. And a month ago we won a treble. I know I keep banging on about it but it has to be said.
“We’ve lost two games in the league. Europe wasn’t good enough and we’re out of the League Cup. They’re human beings, they haven’t played well this season for whatever reason.
“Maybe no fans has had an adverse effect – I don’t know. I haven’t changed. Our procedures and philosophy hasn’t changed. But for some reason there’s too many of them that haven’t performed anywhere near their level.”
Lennon and his Celtic record deserves respect; but it doesn’t extend to this season
I don’t think anyone can deny Lennon has a fine track record for winning trophies at Celtic. However, to suggest there’s anything about this season to be pleased about is total nonsense.
He mentions the treble won at Hampden. Sorry, but it was a couple of games against Aberdeen and Hearts if you’re isolating it to this season. And we did our best to lose to the Championship side in that final last month also. Let’s not forget how close we were to going out.
As for the two league defeats. Really? Is he honestly just going to forget the fact the seven other matches we’ve drawn? Of our 22 games in the Premiership this season, we’ve won 13. That’s not far off from half of them.
It’s all getting ridiculous now and Lennon knows it. Don’t even get me started on no fans having an adverse effect. That’s no excuse for deciding not to give it your all and realise the importance of 10-in-a-row.
What we’re seeing here is a manager in total denial of the situation facing him. A manager who, for some reason, just can’t let go of this job. A manager who, despite previously saying he’ll go when things deteriorate, is now going back on it.
It’s no wonder the Celtic supporters lost patience with this nonsense long ago. We’re becoming a total embarrassment this season, and no, beating Hearts on penalties doesn’t change that.
