Lewis Mayo shares how Kilmarnock players felt after being ‘punished’ by Celtic

Sitting on top of the league after beating Kilmarnock, Celtic’s relentless start to the season doesn’t seem like slowing down any time soon.

Celtic’s win at Kilmarnock follows an impressive Champions League victory over RB Leipzig at Celtic Park midweek.

Prior to those wins, Celtic destroyed Aberdeen in the League Cup and sent out a real statement to Jimmy Thelin’s side that they still have a bit of work to do to catch Brendan Rodgers’ team.

But despite the impressive nature of those wins, Celtic were made to work hard for the Kilmarnock win and that has led Lewis Mayo to admit one thing the Bhoys did that his team couldn’t on Sunday afternoon.

Kilmarnock man admits Celtic ‘punished’ Rugby Park club

The Kilmarnock defender was up against Daizen Maeda at Rugby Park and whilst the Japanese winger was kept at bay, Mayo admits that despite that, Celtic still managed to punish his team.

Mayo told The Scotsman print edition page 52, “You can’t ever be pleased with getting beat, but you can take confidence from it.

“With the level of performance that was there, we do think there was a real chance for us to get a good result, but I just think they punished us and to a degree, we didn’t punish them.”

Well, it seems like Mayo has also bought into that too, “I think the stats suggest that as well,” continues the Kilmarnock defender, “The amount of shots we had, the shots we had blocked, would suggest we put them under as much pressure on their box than ours, maybe even more from us, but as I say, they came up with the clinical moments and we didn’t.

“We’ve had results against them before and that performance felt as good as any for large parts of it.”

With a two-week international break upon them, Brendan Rodgers has some time now to prepare Celtic for the tough run of fixtures coming their way.

Clubb Brugge in the Champions League awaits the Hoops as well as fixtures against Hearts and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.

If Celtic are to take maximum points from those games, then lets hope they dish out more punishment to keep the season motoring on as it has been so far.
