Liam Scales believes Celtic supporters were right to be angry and disappointed after last week’s 2-0 defeat to Hearts.
The Republic of Ireland international has no issue with the chorus of boos that rang around Celtic Park at half-time and full-time as the Bhoys fell to a second successive Scottish Premiership defeat.
Supporters made their feelings very clear to the players, coaching staff and the club board after a dismal performance allowed Hearts to pick up their first win away to Celtic since 2009.
Clearly, it was not a nice thing for Scales and his teammates to experience. However, ahead of Saturday’s test against Livingston, the defender issued the perfect response.
For Scales, it’s up to the team to give fans their money’s worth, especially during the festive season.
Liam Scales backs Celtic supporters despite anger
He said on media duties this week [Daily Record, 22/12 print edition]: “It was a build-up of losing the previous match and making it two games in a row.
“They’re entitled to have a go if they feel like it’s not good enough. Clearly it wasn’t good enough and they spend a lot of money coming up to Christmas, we need to be better for them. I don’t think it was over the top. It hurts but that’s where we need to improve, for them.
“You could sense in the stadium after the game there was anger and disappointment – and rightly so. But I don’t focus on the outside noise, only what is going on in here. It’s easier said than done but we know we need to be better and turn the corner.”

Despite last week’s reaction, fans will show they are behind this group at kick-off against Livingston – you sense a thirst for that unity in the build-up. But it’s up to the team to show they can respond and fill the supporters with a bit of Christmas cheer.
A win tomorrow would only be one step forward towards what could be a long, tense second half of the season but it’d be fantastic to see the team returning to winning ways.
With two away matches and a home derby against Rangers on the immediate horizon, Celtic have to start a busy ten days with the three points.
