Despite a difficult three years at Celtic, Liam Shaw has praised the club and its supporters when speaking to new side Fleetwood Town.

It was announced on Friday that Shaw, after a quiet summer exit from Celtic, has joined the English League Two side until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Shaw made just two appearances for the Bhoys after signing on a pre-contract from Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the Ange Postecoglou era.

The midfielder started and performed well in a 3-2 Celtic Europa League win vs Real Betis, also appearing as a substitute in a 0-0 draw against St Mirren.

Now 23, Shaw has admitted he craved regular first-team football, but also lauded the Celtic experience on and off the pitch in an interview with his new club.

Liam Shaw says Celtic improved him as a player

He said [Fleetwood Town]: “I got the phone call from my agent saying that Celtic were interested, and I thought that was a no-brainer, really. It was a great experience. The atmosphere there is really good as well.

“The standard of training, I feel, has improved me, and getting that experience playing with top players like that.”

On his big night in Europe at Celtic Park, Shaw added: “That was a pinch me moment. I felt I did well, the bonus was we won the game as well. Yeah, that’s an experience I’m going to hold for the rest of my life.”

Shaw needed games to progress his career

Ultimately, Shaw was never going to move forward in football without playing senior matches, and it became clear quite quickly that this wouldn’t happen at Celtic.

Shaw acknowledged that but is now hopeful he can make progress in League Two with Fleetwood.

The midfielder concluded: “Obviously, I didn’t really play much in Scotland. I was itching to get back playing and went to Morecambe, I had a good full season there. I played a lot of football and got my confidence up in a full men’s team. I enjoyed every minute of it.

“You need to be playing games. You can be a good player, but if you’re not playing games, then that doesn’t matter. All the games I’ve played, hopefully it’s going to set me up for the rest of my career.”

Hopefully he finds what he’s looking for back in England. Good luck Liam!
