Limited edition Ayr United jersey featuring unlikely Celtic detail emerges

You probably didn’t expect to hear about a genuine Celtic-themed Ayr United shirt today.

But that’s where we’re at as the Somerset Park club gear up to welcome a Celtic XI to their ground this weekend.

It’s a testimonial match for Ayr hero Michael Moffat, a lifelong Celtic supporter. Not only has Moffat’s organising committee been able to attract a Hoops select side, but they’ve also come up big with an unlikely Ayr kit.

Ayr United revealed their ‘Limited Edition Exclusive Testimonial Jersey’ on Thursday. Manufactured by their kit supplier O’Neills, the shirt looks like their normal white home jersey from the front. (@AyrUnitedFC on Twitter)

However, on the back, just above Moffat’s name, is a traditional Celtic cross. It’s almost identical to this one from our 2018/19 away shirt.

Ayr say that O’Neills “came up with an exclusive design for ‘The Moff’ and Sunday will be it’s one and only outing.” (Ayr United)

Unsurprisingly, the unveiling hasn’t gone down too well with a fanbase who are already disgruntled with the start they’ve made to the season. You can probably imagine some of the reaction.

Of course, Ayr have former Celtic hero Aiden McGeady on their books these days. We’ll have to wait and see what team he turns out for on Sunday.
