"Look at what you've done now": James McClean responds to Celtic message

Republic of Ireland internationals James McLean and Shane Duffy have been attracting the attention of Celtic fans this weekend after jokes and fun on Instagram.

The pair are currently on national duty together and were pictured training with the Irish squad ahead of their fixture with Azerbaijan this evening.

Duffy, who spent an ill-fated loan spell at the Bhoys last season, used that image to crack a caption joke about Celtic not wanting any more Derry boys in the squad, referencing McLean’s long-term dream of turning out for the Hoops. McLean clearly then got a barrage of messages, as his reply was: “Look at what you’ve done now!”

McClean has long been known to be a big Celtic fan. Over the years, he’s even been touted a potential signing in green and white. However, it seems like that opportunity has passed him by.

The midfielder is now 32 and has dropped down to English League One level with Wigan Athletic. The chances of Celtic finally making a move for him are now extraordinarily slim.

Still, it’s good to have a couple of Ireland internationals out there spreading the message of Celtic. I’m sure new Bhoy Liam Scales is getting a smashing education after being named as a late call-up to the squad!

Scales has yet to win a cap for his country but it now seems like a matter of time.

With a number of Celtic youths also representing Ireland at various age groups, the future of the Bhoys’ modern links with Ireland look promising.
