Lubo Moravcik believes Martin O’Neill can lead Celtic to six-in-a-row after insisting his former manager remains “the best available candidate”.

O’Neill was recently confirmed as Celtic’s permanent manager after guiding the club to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double, and Moravcik has no doubts about the appointment.

The Slovakian great worked under O’Neill during a glorious period in Celtic’s modern history and believes the club have made the correct call.

Moravcik’s Celtic verdict carries real weight

Moravcik told The Sunday Post: “After the success of last season, he deserved the right to make that decision on his future.

“It’s a massive call but definitely the right call for Celtic. He was the best available candidate.

“He knows Celtic inside out and knows how to handle the constant pressure of working in Glasgow and coping with the huge demands of delivering trophies.”

Moravcik believes that experience gives O’Neill a significant advantage. Few managers understand both the demands of Celtic and the pressure that comes with delivering trophies in Glasgow.

Moravcik also knows exactly how good O’Neill can be with players.

He added: “When he was my manager 25, 26 years ago, I just loved working under him. He brought the best out in me.

“He still has that ability and you could see the current squad respond positively to him in the final months of the season.”

Celtic’s six-in-a-row challenge starts this summer

Moravcik’s backing is not blind loyalty. He also made it clear that Celtic’s summer business could be crucial.

He said: “His management skills are second to none. He will want new players in as quickly as possible and rightly so. The sooner they arrive and bed in, the better.

“That will give the club the best possible chance of making it six-in-a-row.

“I think Martin can do it because he is a winner.”

That final line is the strongest endorsement of all.

Six-in-a-row will not be handed to Celtic. It has to be earned again, and the squad still needs work before another demanding campaign.

But Moravcik has seen O’Neill’s standards up close. If he believes Celtic have the right man in charge, that verdict deserves to be taken seriously.
