Young Celtic midfielder Luca Connell was pictured training with Neil Lennon’s first-team yesterday, as shown on photo agency SNS Group’s website.
The 18-year-old midfielder hasn’t yet made his senior debut with the club after signing last summer but could now be closing in on that achievement.
Perhaps most intriguingly, he was completely absent from last night’s Celtic Colts team that faced Queen’s Park in the City of Glasgow Cup.
The former Bolton player has been a regular for the second-string this season, playing against Rangers and Clyde in the same competition as well as in the semi-final of the SPFL Reserve Cup last week.
Encouragingly, he scored in all three of those fixtures.
There’s no other information or quotes from Lennon to suggest that Connell is about to be named in a matchday squad, but with his excellent recent form and injuries hitting the Hoops team, it’s not completely unrealistic either.
Olivier Ntcham remains injured right now, leaving the manager down a man in the middle of the park.
With Kristoffer Ajer and Jozo Simunovic also carrying knocks, Nir Bitton has different priorities than covering midfield.
Having Connell training with the squad to provide competition for regulars Scott Brown and Callum McGregor, as well as new signing Ismaila Soro, would make perfect sense.
Tonight’s encounter away to Livingston may prove to be too physical an encounter for an untested teenager to come into but with St Mirren visiting Celtic Park on Saturday ahead of a mammoth match against Rangers, are we about to see a debut?
Don’t rule it out.
