Luke McCowan got off the mark for Celtic last weekend in their victory over Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership.

The 26-year-old came off the bench and helped the Bhoys to win the midfield battle in the latter stages. When his opportunity came to strike, Craig Gordon’s best efforts couldn’t keep the £1 million summer signing from enjoying his dream moment.

Following his solid debut against Rangers, McCowan couldn’t have asked for a better start to life at his boyhood club. Combining his exploits this season at Celtic and Dundee, he is joint second in the Scottish Premiership scoring charts.

Brendan Rodgers will be delighted with his initial impact, which could provide scope for starts under the Irishman as he settles into life at the reigning champions.

Despite the need to swiftly move on to the next task at Celtic, McCowan has delivered a recap of why Saturday’s goal meant so much to him from a personal standpoint.

Luke McCowan on ‘special’ first Celtic goal

Per The Daily Record, McCowan admitted there was a ‘special feeling’ to scoring his debut Celtic goal as some of his family were in attendance to watch him fulfil a lifelong dream.

He stated: “It was special. Luckily enough I had some family there, hoping I’d get on. To make it even better by going and getting a goal, it was just a special feeling for me.

“The boys were going for it right away. It probably wasn’t the start we wanted, but with the amount of chances we create, we know we are going to score goals.

“It was nice to get a wee cushion with the second, but we know the next game (against Bratislava) needs to be better.”

McCowan will be desperate to build on strong Celtic start

Coming in from Dundee, there would’ve been some people who questioned whether McCowan could’ve handled the step up to life at Celtic with little time to adapt.

On the face of it, he is defying any lingering doubters. For too long, there has been an outward snobbery towards the Scottish game from some quarters, but the man in question has been handpicked from the top flight and is thriving under the pressure.

Now, the goal for McCowan is to continue contributing when he gets the opportunity. Granted, he may need to wait his turn, though his chance to start will eventually come in green and white.

Appearing to be a smart acquisition so far; the sky is the limit for the former Dark Blues captain if he keeps up a strong start to his spell in Glasgow.
