Luke McCowan opens up on the alternative football path he has taken to reach Celtic

Luke McCowan needed to show patience to find his way to Celtic during a career that saw him rise from the lower leagues to join his boyhood club.

The 26-year-old was at Scottish Championship outfit Ayr United until 2021 and eventually earned his move to Dundee after netting 18 goals in 78 appearances.

Intriguingly, he was also predominantly a winger at the Honest Men. This trend continued for some of his Dundee career before McCowan moved into a central role and started thriving at Dens Park.

Last term, the Greenock-born man registered ten Scottish Premiership goals, showing his talent in the top flight before netting three times and providing six assists at the beginning of 2024/25.

Celtic couldn’t ignore his performances and eventually brought McCowan in for £1 million on deadline day. Thrusting him into action that weekend, he debuted against Rangers and got a taste of life in the Bhoys’ engine foom, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Offering some insight, the midfielder has now opened up on his football background and why it has inspired him to succeed at Celtic.

Per The Daily Mail, McCowan provided a great account of how his humble beginnings contributed to his move to Celtic. Furthermore, he is adamant the chapters will keep growing as gaining regular first-team football enters his eye line.

He stated: “It is definitely a different path I’ve taken, in terms of playing in the Juniors six years ago, but I think it just shows how special football is at times,’ he said.

“I’ve grown up being a Celtic fan. It’s hard work that’s got me here. It’s like any other job, when you get a promotion, you don’t just put the tools down because you’ve worked hard to get there.

“It takes another step and that’ll be my mentality now — don’t just show you’re a Celtic player, show that you can be a starting Celtic player. Show you’re somebody that can get goals and assists and continue where you left off with Dundee.

“Listen, it’s a great moment for me and my whole family, to be honest. I come from a council estate in Greenock.”

McCowan has shown anything is possible

Rising through the ranks, especially in Scotland, there is such a fine line between professional and part-time football.

In spite of the talent available below the top flight, many don’t make it due to application, bad luck, or choosing to move into part-time due to the earning security it can provide.

McCowan stuck with it and got his reward. Evaluating his interviews, he comes across as a very humble player who is just as excited to be talking about Celtic as most fans.

Living the dream of playing for Celtic is something all supporters have thought about in their lives, even for a split-second. McCowan is doing it for real, but the hard work starts now.
