Luke McCowan reveals Scotland talks, makes Celtic playing time admission

Luke McCowan has revealed that he was put on standby for a Scotland call-up last summer.

This only whetted the Celtic midfielder’s appetite to make his international breakthrough, a lifelong dream of his.

Steve Clarke’s departure has created a vacancy in the Scotland hotseat, and a new manager offers a clean slate to players who were unfancied under the previous regime.

McCowan has his sights set firmly on his Celtic career in the knowledge that his club form is his key to an international call-up.

Luke McCowan: ‘I know I’m good enough for Scotland’

McCowan said: “I know the Scotland squad, especially the midfield, is incredibly talented.

“It’s so, so hard to get in with the amount of quality they have, but it’s something that I know I can be a part of and what I try and strive towards.

“To do that, I need to be playing here. I need to be putting in as much as I can at my club to show that I’m able to go there and put on a good performance. So I just need to keep my head like that.

“I wouldn’t so much be looking at it going, ‘I could do better than the guys playing’…. I wouldn’t think that.

“It’s more [that] I know I’m good enough to be a part of that squad. In terms of who’s there or whatever, I know I could be good enough.

“I’ve got to believe in myself. I know this year, if I want to get a part of it, I need to get starting games, or I need to be coming on and making bigger impacts than what I did last year.

“There was a moment in the summer last year, I think after my first year at Celtic… I was put on standby once.

“But other than that, and that wasn’t from [Clarke], that was from another guy. Somebody phoned to say I was on standby. Wherever I was in the world, I would have gone.

“It would be the same again this year. If I need to go, wherever I am in the world, and join up with Scotland, I would do it. But I just need to make sure I’m firing on all cylinders here.”
