Perhaps the most notable aspect of Neil Lennon’s return to the club as Celtic interim manager is the unexpected renaissance of Mikael Lustig.
The right-back has been a player transformed under Lennon. His performances in the last two games in particular have been vintage Lustig.
Solid in defence
He was solid in defence in the 2-1 win over Rangers, and was full of attacking flair in the 2-0 win over St Mirren. Indeed, it was his shot on goal which led to Timothy Weah opening the scoring against the Saints.
What has been the reason for this sudden up-turn in form? Perhaps it is the fact that Lennon knows the player from his first spell at the club.
Lennon can make him tick
He knows what to say in the dressing room to make Lustig tick. This had led to Lustig playing with a sense of freedom not seen in a long time.
Or perhaps he is playing this way as he is leaving the club in the summer. His contract expires at the end of the season. This could motivate Lustig to battle his way back into the side to show the Hoops what they will be missing next season should he leave the club.
No matter the reason for his upturn in form, Lustig is currently doing the club proud. He seems certain to keep his place in the team for the remainder of the season.
