Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson was left in tears by the Scotland heroics of Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie.
If you wanted to be glib, you could suggest that he’s not the only one that Ryan Christie has made cry this season. The ultimate case of eyes v stats, Christie has endured a frustrating 20-21 with Celtic. However, his antics for the Scotland National Team have garnered plenty of goodwill for the playmaker.
Speaking to UEFA’s Legacy Project, Alex Ferguson admitted to having an emotional reaction to Ryan Christie’s interview. And quite rightly, too, his joy would bring tears to a statue.
Ferguson said [UEFA]:
“[The Serbia game] was absolutely fantastic: from David Marshall’s reaction to that save, not knowing if it had been allowed by the referee, to Ryan Christie’s interview immediately after the game. He had me crying!
“The tragedy of it all is that the Tartan Army wasn’t there.
‘They’ve been following the team for 100 years. I always remember in Italy in the World Cup the fans being there, and we’re missing that, and they miss that.”

It’s been a hard campaign for Celtic supporters to endure, but at the very least, Scottish fans actually have a tournament to watch.
The delayed Euro 2020 is just 50 days away, and the clock is ticking. Here’s hoping for a Covid-free environment to watch matches in. For the nation’s supporters to finally come together after decades of hurt. There are a whole generation of Scotland funs unlucky enough to not remember World Cup 1998.
Mind you, they’re also lucky enough to have not watched Scotland being beaten 3-0 by Morocco. That’s by the by.
So, for all we’ve been frustrated by Ryan Christie this season, the history books won’t remember his inconsistencies, and bizarre predilection for shooting on sight. They’ll remember his interview, his goal, his contributions to a campaign that for once, didn’t end in heartbreak.
After everything that’s happened this week, we didn’t expect a Manchester United icon to make us smile.
We’ll take it, though!
