Celtic supporters are growing increasingly anxious as they wait for official confirmation on Martin O’Neill’s future.
The longer the silence continues, the louder the rumours become. Some fans have even started to wonder whether the deal is at risk of collapsing altogether.
So far, there is more evidence pointing towards O’Neill taking the Celtic job than there is towards the deal falling apart.
What would be your one message to Martin O’Neill about Celtic’s upcoming transfer window?
Mark Guidi has made his Celtic position crystal clear
Speaking on Go Radio, Guidi could hardly have sounded more convinced that O’Neill will remain in charge.
He said, “I suppose that’s the kind of the mystery of it all. I think we’re all taking it as read that that it’s a done deal for Martin O’Neill and the backroom staff, Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham, Steven McManus, Gavin Strachan, and Stevie Woods that it’s done.
“I’m not anticipating any problems with it. But yeah, as a bit of a mystery, you know, why the delay? In terms of office hours close of play now on Wednesday, but maybe it’ll be announced tomorrow. But I’m certain that Martin O’Neill will be the Celtic manager.”
That is not the kind of language journalists tend to use when there is genuine uncertainty surrounding a managerial appointment.
Guidi’s view is straightforward. The agreement is done and the delay is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
The delay is real, but the collapse rumours are not
Supporters are entitled to ask questions. Celtic have still not made an official announcement, and every extra day creates fresh speculation.
However, there is a major difference between a delayed announcement and a failed deal.
Multiple reports in recent days have continued to indicate that O’Neill has agreed to remain in charge, while there has been no credible reporting suggesting negotiations have broken down.
That does not guarantee an announcement will arrive tomorrow or even this week.
What it does mean is that the current evidence points in one direction. The concern among Celtic supporters is understandable, but the rumours claiming the deal is falling through are not backed up by anything concrete at this stage.
Until Celtic finally make their position official, the speculation will continue. For now, though, Guidi’s confidence appears to be supported by the wider reporting landscape.
