Mark Guidi shares ‘the chat’ he’s heard about Brendan Rodgers extending his Celtic contract

Most of the contract chat around the Celtics are about whether or not Greg Taylor or Kasper Schmeichel will extend their stay beyond next summer.

Brendan Rodgers wants Taylor to stay at Celtic but, as yet, the Hoops defender is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Celtic have an option to extend Kasper Schmeichel’s contract if they see fit at the end of the season and after the Denmark international’s performances so far, it seems that Rodgers could trigger that if he sees fit.

But with Rodgers’ own contract expiring in just under 18 months, are Celtic looking to get around the table with the Parkhead boss to see if he is open to extending his own stay in Paradise?

Journalist, Mark Guidi, shares what he’s been hearing about the Celtic boss’ situation.

Dermot Desmond ‘starting to open dialogue’ about extending Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic contract

Guidi told The Go Radio Football Show [1h 22m], “The most important one of the lot is getting the manager tied down. That’s the most important one.

“He’s got 18 months to go. There’s been a bit of chat that there have been chats already with him and Dermot Desmond getting together and starting to open dialogue on it.

“Providing if Brendan Rodgers wants to stay that’s a no-brainer. Give him what he wants and get him tied down for a couple of years.”

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is ‘very settled’ in Glasgow

There are many factors that could determine whether or not Rodgers would want to stay at Celtic. If after three years and the Hoops boss has won every domestic honour and progressed in Europe, would the Northern Irishman want to stay in Glasgow?

It seems that there is one important factor Guidi has shared that could persuade Rodgers to continue on at Parkhead.

“My view on it just now is they wouldn’t get better than Brendan Rodgers,” Guidi continued, “Unless I’m wrong. I know that Dermot Desmond has allocated a very generous salary for the right manager, which is correct and I think Brendan Rodgers is worth every penny by all accounts.

“His family really likes Glasgow; wherever it is they live, they really like it, and they’re very settled. You can tell that he loves the club. There’s a genuine passion there.

“I think internally, he won a war last season in terms of what he wanted and the control that he wanted to have. So he’s won that internal battle which should have been important for him.

“Paul Tisdale comes in which I’m sure would have been with Brendan’s blessing.”

The majority of Celtic fans would undoubtedly be delighted if Rodgers signed an extension to his current contract at the club.

After a shaky start last season, the Hoops boss showed his class and guided Celtic to a league and Scottish Cup double.

With another potential Celtic treble on the cards this season and clear progression being made in the Champions League, everything at the club is positive right now.

If Rodgers does stay beyond the summer of 2026, then Celtic’s domination of Scottish football could continue for a number of years yet.
