Former Celtic star Mark McGhee has hailed the signing of defender Shane Duffy and thinks he’s going to be a smash hit with supporters, speaking to The Sunday Mail today (06/09 print edition, page 62).
Duffy has arrived on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, following successful years with them on the south coast in the English Championship and Premier League.
As an experienced operator who has tested himself against some of the best attackers in football, there is an expectation that the Ireland captain can make a huge impact in the Scottish Premiership.
McGhee, who also managed Brighton, thinks Lennon has pulled off a bit of a transfer coup.
As quoted by The Sunday Mail (06/09 print edition, page 62), he said: “Shane’s aggressive and he’ll attack the ball in both boxes. He’s a big, strong boy and fearless but there’s more to him than that.
“He also has decent pace plus Brighton don’t sign players who can’t pass the ball and he’s not scared to do that. The Celtic punters will love him.
“He’s just reaching his peak and he’s playing regularly for his country.
“Celtic lost aggression when Kieran Tierney left for Arsenal but they’ll get it back – and then some – with Shane.”
The Scottish champions don’t often have the luxury of signing a player in his peak years directly from the Premier League but Duffy’s passion for Celtic has allowed us to bag real quality this summer.

Almost every one of Lennon’s signings during the current transfer window has the ability to improve the starting eleven.
The decision-makers at the club are backing the manager wholeheartedly in the quest for ten-in-a-row.
Hopefully Duffy can make the kind of impact that McGhee describes. There’d be no finer sight than the passionate Irishman helping us towards more trophy success.
In other news, Cameron Harper has packed on a lot of muscle over the summer and is ready to make a push for his debut.
