Mark Wilson has claimed that the Celtic managerial race is now down to two candidates – Eddie Howe and Roy Keane.

Celtic are still on the hunt for a new manager after a trying season has left fans furious. The Hoops have been left with nothing but apathy for a board that threw 10-in-a-row away just to see how long they could keep Neil Lennon for.

This sheer betrayal and dereliction of duty leaves them owing fans big time. An exciting new manager for next season is now a necessity, which all sorts of opinions flying around on who that could be. It feels, even as we’re still two months from the end of the campaign, that it’s been going on forever.

But Wilson believes the club have finally narrowed their shortlist down to two candidates. This was reported on the Celtic Huddle Podcast this week, where Mark made the following remarks:

“We’ll look at the managerial situation again as nothing as happened, and what we expect could be an appointment made in the next few days.

“The Celtic Huddle’s information is that it’s between Eddie Howe and Roy Keane, but the former Bournemouth man is the favourite.”

Only one contender in the Celtic supporters’ eyes; managerial race continues

These comments from Wilson follow on from the Daily Mail’s report on the situation last week. They claimed on Friday that Keane had spoken to the Celtic board, whilst the likes of Jesse Marsch and Steve Clarke were on a shortlist.

Whether that’s been narrowed down remains to be seen. But it seems plausible given the Times reported over the weekend that Keane was unlikely to become the next Celtic boss. This was to do with Dermot Desmond not being as enamoured with him this time around as he had been in the past.

If it is a straight shootout from this point on, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who the Celtic fans would prefer. Fans simply aren’t impressed with Keane’s track record. And having been out of management for a decade, he represents too great a risk on that basis alone.

Howe, meanwhile, is a fresh-faced option. His triple-promotion success with Bournemouth over two spells hasn’t been forgotten. The Celtic fans have him as their number one choice these days, and it’s a no-contest as things stand.

Desmond isn’t one to make rash appointments of course. Unless it’s Neil Lennon he wants to appoint right enough. If he’s going down the route fans want to go on, he’ll likely drag it out. For there’s very little reason to believe he’s going to start treating us with respect or care. There’s been no evidence of it this season.

But the Celtic Huddle Podcast certainly seem to believe the managerial race has taken a big step forward. Here’s hoping – it’s getting incredibly tiresome to discuss!
