Celtic icon Martin O’Neill has admitted that the reaction in some quarters to the appointment of Neil Lennon as the next Hoops boss has left him dismayed.
Some supporters feel that the appointment of Lennon is a step-down from that of former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers. This has been supported by some poor performances by the Hoops when Lennon was interim manager last season.
However, O’Neill, who managed Lennon at Celtic, feels that the Hoops boss doesn’t deserve the criticism he has received.

“Took me aback”
“When I heard there was some criticism towards Neil getting the job, I would have to say that it truly took me aback” he said, as reported by the Scottish Sun.
“I really can’t get my head around it at all because I don’t think he put a foot wrong after taking over from Brendan Rodgers.”

Naturally now that Lennon has been appointed Hoops manager, the support will unite as one behind the manager.
O’Neill’s point of view is understandable
You can understand O’Neill’s point of view. Lennon managed to secure the treble under what can’t have been easy circumstances.

However, you can understand the reaction of the supporters, particularly after the timing of the managerial appointment.
Still, all that is in the past and from now on Lennon will be supported by all at the club. Perhaps he will prove wrong those who don’t think he is the man for the job. Martin O’Neill believes that he will.
