Martin O’Neill on if Kelechi Iheanacho and Alistair Johnston travelled with Celtic squad to Midtjylland

The last time Martin O’Neill was in Europe with Celtic, he was losing to the might of AC Milan in the Champions League.

With all due respect to FC Midtjylland and even this Celtic side now, they are nowhere near what those teams were 21 years ago.

Celtic have picked up four points from their opening three Europa League matches, including beating Sturm Graz on home soil last time out.

It’s also the last time Celtic supporters saw Kelechi Iheanacho and Alistair Johnston in action, as the duo have been sidelined since.

Thankfully, Johnny Kenny and Callum Osmand have provided Celtic with a spark up front, because the champions of Scotland are set to be without Iheanacho again.

The Nigeria international only lasted four minutes against Sturm Graz, and now O’Neill has told his press conference that he ‘isn’t fit’ for the Denmark trip.

Unfortunately, Johnston is in the same boat, as he and Iheanacho haven’t travelled with the Celtic squad.

“No (Johnston hasn’t travelled),” responded O’Neill. “He isn’t fit. And he (Kelechi Iheanacho) isn’t fit.”

Hopefully, with the November international break approaching, this will allow these two, especially Johnston, to return to training without rushing them.

It’s pretty clear Celtic did that with Johnston, but Anthony Ralston and Colby Donovan have filled in pretty well during his absence.

As for Iheanacho, he was with the travelling squad that beat Rangers at Hampden, so you presume he is closer to returning, and it might just be this weekend against Kilmarnock.
