Martin O’Neill says Celtic ‘should be looking at’ buying Marcelo Saracchi permanently

Martin O’Neill thinks Celtic would be making a mistake if they don’t sign Marcelo Saracchi on a permanent basis.

Saracchi scored his first goal for Celtic against Livingston in the week and has proved to be an astute piece of business.

He has balanced the left-back role alongside Kieran Tierney but recently had a spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Livingston was the first chance O’Neill had to play the Uruguay international, and that was enough to convince him that the Hoops should be keeping him beyond the end of this season.

Only one of Kieran Tierney and Marcelo Saracchi can start against Kilmarnock

Martin O’Neill is a huge fan of Marcelo Saracchi

Tierney may return to the starting XI for the Kilmarnock game on Sunday but nobody would begrudge O’Neill for sticking with Saracchi once again.

The 27-year-old is set to return to Boca Juniors at the end of the season, but O’Neill thinks that the Hoops should be doing what they can to keep him in Glasgow.

He said: “I think they should do. He’s a strange wee character. He hasn’t a clue what I’m saying to him. Not a clue!

“I mean, I could be saying anything to him, and he would still say yes to it. I think the club should be looking at something like that.”

Martin O’Neill’s nickname for Marcelo Saracchi revealed

There aren’t many managers better than O’Neill when it comes to man-management.

He is great at putting an arm around the shoulder of players and getting the best out of them, as well as providing the odd joke or two.

English is not Saracchi’s first language, leading to O’Neill calling him Manuel from Fawlty Towers because of the language barrier.
