Martin O’Neill’s latest intervention in the Celtic pitch invasion debate landed because he said what plenty watching were already thinking.
The former Celtic manager did not just defend supporters again. He openly questioned why Tony Bloom was not pushed harder during the discussion surrounding the Parkhead pitch invasion.
The media narrative surrounding the Celtic pitch invasion was shot to pieces after no evidence was found of Hearts players being assaulted, and O’Neill immediately took aim at White for his tame questioning of Bloom midweek.
Just how badly has the SFA’s VAR audio from the Premiership finale reflected on Hearts…
Martin O’Neill slams Jim White’s handling of Celtic row
White grilled O’Neill on the Celtic Park pitch invasion and was pushing for the Hoops boss to call out supporters. But when Bloom claimed Hearts players were assaulted, O’Neill was clearly irked that his old talkSPORT chum did not grill the Tynecastle investor further for proof.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer, O’Neill said: “The statement was in dealing with me, so I’m surprised that no one has further investigated these assault charges.
“I thought that Mr. Bloom might have been questioned a wee bit further by Jim [White] in that, you know. Seemingly not.”
O’Neill’s frustration has been building for weeks. His previous exchanges over Celtic’s title celebrations already showed he had grown tired of the framing surrounding the debate.
That became obvious when he previously hit out at the “skulduggery” narrative attached to Celtic’s title success.
He also lost patience with Jim White during another discussion around the Parkhead celebrations earlier this month.
This latest exchange felt different because O’Neill stopped talking generally about narratives and directly challenged the handling of the discussion itself.
Why O’Neill’s criticism of White will resonate with Celtic fans
The reaction to O’Neill’s comments was immediate because viewers could clearly see what he was getting at.
His argument was not that difficult questions should disappear. It was that scrutiny should apply evenly when serious claims are being discussed publicly.
That is why the moment gained traction so quickly among Celtic supporters. O’Neill shifted the conversation away from outrage and back towards whether the questioning itself had been balanced.
Given the number of public debates around Celtic’s title celebrations in recent weeks, it is not difficult to understand why his comments struck a chord.
O’Neill has repeatedly defended the club against what he believes has become exaggerated coverage. This time, however, he made Jim White part of the story directly.
