Marvin Compper’s time at Celtic could finally be coming to an end, as the club have started talks with his representatives.

The German centre-back has only ever played once in competitive action for the Hoops. That was in a 3-0 victory over Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup back in March. Since then, we haven’t seen him make one other outing in a Hoops jersey.

His signing has turned into a parody these days. Supporters use him as a running joke, with the club almost refusing to give a reason for why he was signed or who was responsible for it.

The deal has been an absolute disaster from start to finish. But finally an end could be in sight.

In the Scottish Sun today, Brendan Rodgers has stated that talks have finally begun with his representatives.

“There’s nothing as of yet – the club are speaking to Marvin’s representatives to try and find a solution.”

There’s only one solution to this situation

The truth is, there’s only one solution that all parties can come to here, and it doesn’t involve a new contract.

Compper’s time at Celtic simply has to be up. He’ll be on decent wages, and the club could do with stopping that. A deal for him to go elsewhere would be ideal, but you would then have to hope someone would take him.

Given the German’s injury history at Leipzig and Celtic, who would possibly be interested? There’s been no approach from any clubs for the clearly out-of-favour centre-back. No interest has been reported either.

A mutual agreement to rip up his contract could come into effect. Compper, however, may be the kind who wants to sit back and have his wages drop into his account without doing anything. It’s unfair to accuse him of that, however, until the talks have been finalised and a solution found.

It’s great to see work is being done to get Compper out of the club anyway. Already, it’s long overdue.
