Marvin Compper’s Celtic career is done and dusted as he today completed a move to German outfit Duisburg.

Compper leaves Parkhead having just made one single appearance for the club. That outing came in a Scottish Cup clash against Greenock Morton at Celtic Park. He’s never played a Premiership or European game for the Hoops.

Duisburg currently plies its trade in the third-tier of German football. It’s quite a drop for Compper considering he was playing for Red Bull Leipzig in the Bundesliga just a couple of years ago.

Speaking to the BBC, Duisburg Sporting Director Ivo Grlic appeared delighted to have gotten his man.

“We’ve got exactly the experienced centre-back we really wanted. I’ve talked to him for a long time and my patience and stubbornness has paid off”

The deal was agreed after Celtic let Compper go thanks to a mutual termination of his contract. Celtic will likely just be delighted to get him off the wage bill.

Compper’s Celtic career has been doomed for a while

He was becoming a running joke at Parkhead, that much was clear. Just look at the ironic cheer he got when he collected his Premiership winner’s medal at the end of last season.

But credit must go to the Celtic board for getting yet another flop out of the club this summer. He joins Youssouf Mulumbu in leaving Parkhead after he only made three appearances in Glasgow himself. It, therefore, frees up wages for the Hoops to use in the future.

It’s difficult to say where Compper sits in terms of the worst ever players to play for Celtic. After all, we barely saw him play for the club at all. But the fact we splashed out £1m on his services in January 2018, he’s up there for the worst value for money ever.

It’s a night for celebration, and Duisburg will now be fondly remembered by many a Celtic fan for taking the much-maligned Compper off of our hands.

The deal is also announced just hours before Celtic take to the field for their third pre-season game against St Gallen. And now it’s been confirmed big Marvin won’t be there. Then again, however, when was he ever.
