Marvin Compper’s appearance in the starting line-up for Celtic’s reserves today has to be the talking point of the afternoon.
Despite the fact the likes of Vakoun Issouf Bayo and Scott Allan featured, Compper hasn’t been heard of for months by the Celtic support.
The latest we’ve heard of him was regarding a potential departure from the club in January. But after that failed to materialise, we just assumed he would rot until the next one.

But this afternoon, he started at Cappielow to be part of a Celtic side that hammered Falkirk 4-1. And supporters couldn’t help but have a chuckle at his appearance in the team.
Taking to Twitter, here’s the best of what fans had to say regarding the big German defender.

Difficult to get your hopes up anymore
Usually, when a player makes an appearance for the reserves as high a profile one as Compper, it’s tough not to think of it as a fresh start. But with the big German, it’s the polar opposite.
Celtic fans will struggle to believe for one minute that there’s any sort of renaissance on the card for the former Leipzig defender. For good reason too.
Despite signing on a two-year contract last January, Compper has made just one senior appearance for Celtic. He also stated earlier on this season that his own team-mates believe he should be playing. It’s hard to find that easy to believe.

And considering the fact it feels as though Compper is rooted to the bottom of the pecking order, it’s difficult to see the situation changing. Every single current centre-back has made more appearances this season than the German.
So it’s no surprise that supporters treated this rare occurrence in comical fashion. These days, it’s just far too hard to take Compper remotely seriously.
For what it’s worth, Celtic won the game 4-1, with Compper playing the full 90 minutes. Does it mean anything? Most likely not.
