Massive blow for Scott Sinclair at Celtic tonight

Celtic vs St Mirren was always going to be a game where Neil Lennon gave several players a chance.

That proved to be the case. Greg Taylor was handed his debut whilst Moritz Bauer was given a rare start. Lenny was certainly keen to try out one or two things against the lowly Buddies.

Celtic managed to overcome Saints 2-0 at Parkhead on the night. It was a result that was enough to keep us locked at the top of the Premiership table.

However, Scott Sinclair was again omitted in a game we all would’ve expected him to have at least been in the squad. Instead, Lewis Morgan and Jonny Hayes were both on the bench instead. Two other left-wingers who aren’t normally first-choice.

This is seriously damning for the Englishman. These are exactly the kind of fixtures over the winter period that he must’ve been hoping he would play in.

The fact that Lenny overlooked him tonight doesn’t read well for his first-team chances.

Nobody can predict when Sinclair will feature

Let’s be honest – he isn’t going to play in our bigger games this season. Against the likes of Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibernian, and European games, Sinclair won’t start. He just isn’t anywhere near the first-team.

But in matches such as St Mirren, Livingston, and Ross County, you would expect him to be making an appearance of some form. But the fact is he hasn’t played against any of the sides mentioned.

Sinclair’s contract is also up at the end of the season. It’s not as if he has a lot of time to fire himself back into contention. Why would Lennon put his trust in a player who’s likely to leave at the end of the campaign? Especially not when he has other options who are of better quality than Sinclair.

The Englishman, however, is clearly a better player than Morgan. He probably offers more at left-mid than Hayes too. But the fact he hasn’t even made the matchday squad tonight is a big blow for him.

If he’s to get his opportunities during this hectic schedule of fixtures, they’re supposed to come in games like this one. It’s not a great look for Sinclair, and in our opinion, there’s no way back for him at this stage.
