Mat Ryan addresses summer Celtic speculation; confirms Hoops didn't move for him
Real Sociedad goalkeeper Mat Ryan has addressed the speculation that had him linked with Celtic in the summer.
Before moving from Brighton to La Liga, Ryan was linked with several destinations. One of them was Celtic, with Sky Sports reporting that the Hoops were considering a move for the Australian veteran.
However, in the end, Ryan moved to Sociedad whilst Celtic brought in Joe Hart. The former came as a slight surprise given the relationship between Ange Postecoglou and Ryan.
But the veteran stopper has revealed that Celtic didn’t even approach him with an offer.
As quoted by Sporting News Australia, Ryan said about Celtic: “It was never a concrete option, obviously there was a lot of speculation in the media about it.
“The timing of it all, Ange had just arrived there and I think he was taking a look at his squad and all that.
“It never eventuated into anything so at that time Real came along, expressed an interest and we really liked the project that was being described to us.”
Mat Ryan had no offer on the table from Celtic
Interesting to note that Celtic never made a move for the Australian international. You would’ve thought that this would’ve been one of Postecoglou’s primary targets when he came to the club.
Of course, that could simply be adding two and two together and getting five. It’s easy to forget just how much Postecoglou had on his plate when he first joined up. He would’ve been looking to avoid buying replacements where he could afford to.
The Ryan speculation came before it was clear Vasilis Barkas’ form wasn’t going to improve. It came before Scott Bain again proved to the manager he wasn’t good enough to keep the jersey either. So you could understand why Celtic may have held off.
In the end, we can’t argue with who we brought into the club. Signing Hart was massive for us, and hopefully that’s solved the big goalkeeping issue we currently have.
So far, the England international has kept one clean sheet in his first two games so far. But he’s already looking like a much more commanding presence than Barkas or Bain proved to be.
Ryan would’ve been a fine signing. However, there’s not much to argue about given Celtic decided not to bother making the move.
