Celtic were in fine fettle yesterday as they saw off Kilmarnock in their Scottish Premiership opener at Parkhead.

Matt O’Riley was charged with pulling the strings in midfield alongside Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate, and it is fair to say he played his part as the Bhoys made a statement of intent in a 4-0 victory.

Despite links with Chelsea surrounding his name, the Denmark international pitched in with an assist and the creation of seven chances on home soil, lending credence to why he is being heavily courted south of the border and further afield [Fotmob].

Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to keep hold of O’Riley. He is the heartbeat of the engine room and is rarely absent when Celtic are on the front foot. Nevertheless, that is a topic of conversation for another day.

Following his exploits yesterday, plenty of his teammates were quick to compliment the 23-year-old after he posted on Instagram marking the Flag Day victory.

On the social media platform, O’Riley posted a selection of pictures from the rout against Kilmarnock with the caption ‘Oooof it’s good to be back’, which is bound to delight the Celtic support.

There were also plenty of responses from his teammates, with Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn replying with dance emojis. This was in relation to their brilliant combined goal celebration after the latter drove past several defenders before his deflected strike evaded Robby McCrorie.

New signing Viljami Sinisalo was clearly impressed by O’Riley, writing the word ‘Class’ in the comments. Anthony Ralston left two love hearts; meanwhile, former Celtic icon Joe Hart left two applauding emojis, supporting his old colleague from the comfort of retirement.

Collectively, the Celtic squad find themselves on a high and deserve credit for claiming three deserved points against Kilmarnock, which has them sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership table in an early stage.

Nobody will be getting carried away about what the wider context of the season could hold, but it is nice to have a wave of positivity reverberating among the fanbase due to a dominant performance on the pitch.

With Hibernian away next up for the Bhoys, hopefully, Rodgers’ men can strike up some healthy momentum in the hunt for a fourth straight league title.
