Matt O’Riley has played down comparisons made between himself and Celtic icon Tom Rogic, insisting it isn’t fair on either player.

O’Riley has made a brilliant impact at the Bhoys since joining in January, rapidly becoming a favourite of supporters in an advanced, creative midfield role.

His style of play has naturally attracted comparisons to Rogic, and many are wondering whether the former MK Dons man is the player who will fill the void of the Australian following his exit.

However, speaking to Celtic TV, O’Riley made it clear he wants to be his own man, stating: “I’ll always try to be that creative player anyway, for myself. I know I’ve been compared to Tom a lot, but I don’t think that’s fair on either of us, really.

“I know what he’s done for the club, I know how much of great a player he is. From my perspective, I’m trying to be my own player, so that’s what I’m going to try and do. I’ll do my everything to help the team by creating chances.”

Meanwhile, the Celtic midfielder was also asked about his influence in the signing of Moritz Jenz this summer.

It’s well known by now that the two players are close friends from their time at Fulham together, and it seems O’Riley’s role on this matter wasn’t just limited to a few friendly text exchanges, as Jenz previously revealed.

His advice was sought in determining whether or not Jenz would be a good fit for the Bhoys.

O’Riley told Celtic TV: “Yeah, I was just trying to prod a few coaches here and there, making them aware of him. I knew Celtic were already interested in him.

“I had a couple of chats with a couple of staff members. They actually asked me what he was like as a person. Obviously, I knew him really well and said he was a great guy and that he would fit in perfectly. So far he has, and long may it continue.”

The Celtic midfielder is primed to have an impressive second season at the club, already stating his intention to also push for the Denmark World Cup squad.

It all starts tomorrow when he’ll be a likely starter in the Flag Day clash with Aberdeen. Whether like Rogic or not, I’m sure he’ll make a big impact over the coming campaign.
