Mark Warburton may have been a Rangers manager but he always seemed to know the score.

The Englishman was hesitant when he won the Scottish Championship with the Light Blues as he felt the size and form of Celtic would be too much for his side back in 2016. The pressure got to him at the time.

Since his Ibrox departure he has gone on to better things including coaching with West Ham and managing Queen’s Park Rangers, but now his most recent switch to the USA has prompted the 62-year-old to pitch an unexpected partnership with Scotland’s finest.

Warburton has taken on the role of sporting director and head of soccer for new USL franchise Sporting Club Jacksonville.

And he wasted little time in suggesting they link up with Celtic and/or Rangers in what might be an interesting global strategy.

“Every club in the world is looking for bigger recruitment talent, bigger player pools,” said Warburton to the Scottish Sun.

“It’s about creating player pathways. I can see how partnerships work and, of course, any partnership has to be two ways. When you talk about major British clubs, Rangers and Celtic are global institutions with global fan bases.

“So absolutely, you would be very fortunate to partner with these types of clubs. It’s only a matter of time before it’s taken forward.”

Rangers under Warburton’s poor record vs Celtic

Warburton may hope for a better run with his new club in the US than he had at Rangers.

He only won half of his matches in the Scottish Premiership as manager over there before he was sacked and his record vs the Hoops is poor.

Only the infamous Scottish Cup win in 2016 will be remembered by both sets of supporters for different reasons.

Rangers under Warburton faced Celtic four times and lost three of them. The other was the aforementioned cup tie which they won on penalties.
