Luke McCowan has made a fantastic start to his Celtic career.

The 26-year-old joined Celtic in the summer from Dundee and is fulfilling his dream of now playing for his boyhood club.

Another one of McCowan’s big targets would be to represent Scotland on the big stage and break into a pretty competitive Steve Clarke squad.

Yes, certain aspects of the Scotland side lack quality or are low in quality, but the midfield is perhaps one of the strongest.

Even with Callum McGregor retiring from Scotland duty, you still have the likes of John McGinn, Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour playing at a seriously high level.

That’s why McCowan might have to wait his turn to represent his country, but Celtic is the perfect platform for him to break into that.

But the versatile midfielder isn’t the only one being talked about in Scottish circles because Motherwell’s rising star Lennon Miller is also getting a mention.

Miller is the talk of the domestic circuit, even Celtic are getting mentioned in regards to signing him in the near future.

Therefore, it shouldn’t be a surprise that many are pushing for the 18-year-old to earn his maiden Scotland call-up.

But that has been shut down by Michael Stewart, who stated that he agrees with the Scotland boss in snubbing the teenager, as he told the Scottish Football Podcast.

Stewart expressed how even McCowan is ‘another one who has the quality’ to be in the squad, but it’s ‘one of the strongest parts’ of the team.

“I said to you last week that I am in full agreement with the manager (Steve Clarke in not selecting Lennon Miller), for me,” said Stewart. “Is he capable of being in the Scotland squad? Yes.

“But there is more than enough quality in there. Age doesn’t really come into it because I think he is capable. There is no point in pushing it when there is all the quality there. You look at Ben Doak, the age is irrelevant, but we need that type of player in the team, so get him in.

“But with Lennon Miller, I don’t see the urgency or the rush. His time will come. But there is more than enough quality in there. I know it’s a different debate because Luke McCowan is older and he’s not playing every week for Celtic. But he is another one who has the quality to be in the Scotland squad. No question for me. It’s one of the strongest parts of the squad.”

McCowan’s stats for Celtic

McCowan is quickly becoming a fan favourite and it’s helped by the fact that he is a Celtic supporter himself.

But amid the hype, excitement and expectation around his arrival, he is producing and has made a pretty productive start.

Given that McCowan is playing at the level of Celtic and in the Champions League, if he continues in this way, then it won’t be too long before he is repping his country.

Tranfermarkt shows that he already has 11 goal involvements to his name this season and he isn’t playing on a regular basis.
