Michael Stewart shares intriguing verdict on where Luke McCowan should sit in Celtic pecking order

Luke McCowan is fast-emerging as one of Celtic’s stars of the season after a series of excellent performances since moving to Parkhead in the summer.

Signing from Dundee, the 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength at the Scottish Premiership champions, registering three strikes and laying another trio of goals on for his teammates.

Against Ross County, Luke McCowan scored once and recorded three assists as Celtic enjoyed a fantastic 5-0 victory to extend their lead at the summit ahead of facing Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

Despite only starting three times for his boyhood club, there are plenty of calls for £1 million Celtic addition McCowan to claim a starting berth in Brendan Rodgers’ engine room after consistently taking his opportunity to impress.

Now, Michael Stewart has shared a verdict that will stir up debate among Celtic supporters over where he should lie in the pecking order.

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, Stewart thinks McCowan should be a fixture in the side before Paulo Bernardo amid stiff competition for places in the Celtic midfield.

He explained: “I just thought that Luke McCowan was outstanding. I was watching the game, and I was saying to myself personally, I know Bernardo scores there, but Luke McCowan also scores; a great goal from Callum McGregor as well there.

“For me, I think personally, and I’ve thought this even before this game, I think Luke McCowan should be in the discussion (to start for Celtic)

“If you’re looking at Engels not playing, then I think Luke McCowan is up there. I would personally be playing him ahead of Paulo Bernardo.”

Celtic’s midfield is their strongest area without question

If you are taking depth, quality and experience into account, Celtic’s midfield trumps any other area of the pitch due to the diversity of options available in the engine room.

Callum McGregor is the standard bearer for the club, while Reo Hatate and Arne Engels bring energy, substance and an element to cut sides open.

Bernardo and McCowan have proved they deserve to be right in that discussion after Saturday’s convincing victory, so it will be intriguing to see who gets the nod at Pittodrie tomorrow night.

Whether the latter deserves a place over the former is purely personal preference. Both bring an abundance of talent to the table and will feature plenty as the campaign progresses.
