Mikael Lustig and Gent left waiting as UEFA row rumbles on

Mikael Lustig is still waiting to see whether he’ll be playing Europa League football for Gent next season.

The Swede ended a seven-and-a-half year stay in Glasgow last month when he switched Celtic for the Belgian top-flight side. Lustig’s new side finished outside the European places last season but could be handed a reprieve after KV Mechelen were recently found guilty of match-fixing.

Mechelen were banned from European competition but have appealed the decision and are currently in line to play in the Europa League.

Where do Lustig and Gent come in to this?

Gent are set to take a Europa League place and play as early as next week if Mechelen are thrown out. The Belgians will take on the Romanians Viitorul Constanta in just over a week of Mechelen are excluded. If not, it will be Antwerp who play that match.

Pretty confusing stuff. But the fact of the matter is that it’s the middle of July and Lustig doesn’t yet know whether he’ll be playing European football this season or not.

Dutch outlet HLN reports that Gent are still unsure what’s happening after UEFA and the Belgian FA “did not want to take the plunge”.

The article finishes off by saying “Belgian football is in an impasse”. Interesting times indeed.
