Mikael Lustig’s contract is up at the end of the season, and he’s stated that AIK are fully aware of it.

The Stockholm based club have been linked with a move for Lustig if he becomes a free agent. Yet, the arrival of Neil Lennon appears to have given him a Hoops renaissance.

There’s no deal in sight as of yet from Celtic for the Swedish right-back. But, with no new manager in sight for next season either, that’s understandable.

It remains to be seen whether Celtic do get in touch with him over that new contract. But, in any case, Lustig has confirmed that he’s been in contact with the Swedish side regarding his situation. Speaking in the Scottish Sun, this is what the Celtic stalwart had to say.

“Has there been contact from AIK? Absolutely. They know about my situation. We have not spoken about any contract but then I don’t really know how the rules are.

“I will find out more this week.”

You have to wonder to what extent the right-back situation has changed. When Jeremy Toljan arrived on-loan from Borussia Dortmund, it would’ve been unlikely to see Lustig having a future at Parkhead.

But, as we enter the final weeks of Lustig’s contract, Toljan’s poor form means that the right-back spot is up for grabs once again. Former AIK man Lustig will fancy himself to seize it in the coming weeks.

Lustig says that he expects to hear more this week. It will be interesting to see whether a new contract beckons for him given his newly-found importance to the squad.

At the moment, Celtic are staring down the barrel of losing three of their four right-backs. With Cristian Gamboa also out of contract and Toljan set for a Dortmund return, Celtic will therefore be extremely short. It’s not out of the question Celtic subsequently keep Lustig around for some depth as opposed to a mass upheaval in the one position.

You have to wonder how tempting it is for Lustig to go back home at this stage of his career. It feels that, if Celtic want to tie him down, they’ll need to move soon.
