Celtic winger Mikey Johnston picked up his first assist for loan side Vitoria de Guimaraes on Sunday during their 2-2 draw against Arouca.

The 23-year-old made the decision to head out on loan to Portugal this summer in the hope of gaining more regular game time.

Johnston has had a difficult few years due to injury and will be desperate to make an impact on his temporary spell in order to kick-start his Celtic career.

After completing his transfer deadline day move, the winger has slowly been integrated into the Vitoria de Guimaraes side following several training sessions with his new teammates.

Last weekend, the Scotland under-21 internationalist made his debut off the bench at halftime during a 1-0 win over Santa Clara and was praised for his quality.

On Sunday evening, the Celtic academy graduate once again came off the bench at halftime to make his second appearance for his new club and had an impact on the scoreline.

With his side 1-0 down after 45 minutes, Johnston was introduced into the game, and just over 10 minutes later, the winger set up Vitoria de Guimaraes’ first equaliser in the dramatic draw.

Some quick thinking by the Celtic attacker would see him play Guimaraes forward Anderson in on goal after his side won the ball up high up the pitch.

Johnston’s loan side would fall behind once again in the second half before scoring a 102nd-minute equaliser to take home a point.

Of course, Arouca may be a familiar name to some Celtic supporters. Johnston’s former teammate Ismaila Soro is also currently out on loan in Portugal and playing his football for the side that currently sits 12th place in the top flight.

However, the on-loan Celtic man missed out on the chance to face his fellow loanee after being sent off during Arouca’s 2-1 loss to Boavista.

Whilst Soro may have been in the stands for Sunday’s fixture, Mikey Johnston put in what sounds like another solid cameo in the second half.

The wideman will be hoping to build upon his two substitute appearances so far by earning his first start for his loan side in the coming weeks, with a fixture against Benfica next for Guimaraes in the league.

It is great to see that the Celtic winger appears to be adapting quickly to life in Portugal, and hopefully, we can see more impressive performances in the next few weeks and months,
