Even most of those who acknowledged that Mikey Johnston holds talent and potential probably didn’t expect his loan move from Celtic to West Brom to be so successful.

The winger has netted an impressive six goals in ten English Championship appearances, helping the Baggies make a promotion playoff push.

His profile is rising with goal clips across social media, praise from his manager, rave reviews from teammates and pundits, as well as increasing transfer chatter ahead of the summer.

Celtic hold his contract until the summer of 2026 and Brendan Rodgers has indicated Johnston will at least return to the Bhoys initially to be assessed before a decision is made on a potential permanent move to West Brom or another club.

Explaining why he’s doing so well in England after struggling somewhat at Celtic, he was pretty forthright.

Johnston sounds pretty happy in his current environment and has put his improving form down to the trust received from his manager Carlos Corberan and his teammates.

Mikey Johnston on what he’s getting at West Brom

The Republic of Ireland international said [Birmingham Live]: “It feels more like it’s my position to lose here and I just need to keep performing every week but it’s always good to have competition for places. We’ve got guys with quality coming back, experienced lads too like Matty Phillips and we’ll need to lean on lads like that towards the end of the season.

“It just feels like I needed a run of games to play in my position and have some trust from my teammates and the manager. I’ve had that while I’ve been here and it’s what’s helped me kick on.

“Earlier in my career I had a lot of injuries, was in and out and was always trying to establish myself. I’d maybe start one week, then not the next and it’s always hard when you’re consistently not playing. That’s what I’ve needed and that’s what I’ve been getting at Albion.”

The Baggies have eight matches left in their push for promotion and appear in good shape to book a place in that four-team play-off picture.

Johnston is going to be a key part of their Premier League ambitions and if he plays a starring role in getting them up then his value will skyrocket.

That’s good news for the player and Celtic. Big decisions are looming on the direction of Johnston’s career and it’ll be very interesting to see how it all pans out this summer.
