Mikey Johnston withdraws from Scotland under-21s squad with injury

Mikey Johnston has withdrawn from the Scotland under-21s squad after picking up an injury.

The 20-year-old played 83 minutes of Sunday’s derby victory over Rangers, before being substituted by the scorer of the second goal Jonny Hayes. The Scottish winger has already missed a couple of consecutive matches this season, after picking up an injury in the 7-0 victory over St. Johnstone.

And now he’s set to sit out his international side’s upcoming fixtures, with Scotland under-21s boss Scot Gemmill confirming the injury but giving little else away.

“Mikey has had to return to his club so he’s out of both games,” he told the Scottish Sun. “It’s down to the club to reveal any details of his injury.

“It’s about chances and hopefully you’ll see another exciting young player.

“Of course we would like Mikey available but it’s an opportunity for someone else.”

Johnston injury is no big deal for Celtic

Johnston’s injury isn’t nearly as much of a worry as it would have been a week ago. The recent capture of Mohamed Elyounoussi, on loan from Southampton, gives us another option on the left-wing and many fans will now hope they get to see their new man after the international break.

Elyounoussi wasn’t included in Lars Lagerback’s most recent Norway squad so he can concentrate fully on Celtic for the next week ahead of our trip to Hamilton Accies.

The signing of the former Basel man should do wonders for the team and Johnston. The young winger has been terrific in the early stages of the season but he is still unreliable at the age of 20.

Elyounoussi should offer Celtic real quality on the left while Johnston can also contribute in certain matches.
