Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths finds himself on the Scotland bench again today, even as Lyndon Dykes drops out of the starting eleven.
Steve Clarke’s heroes face Slovakia away from home attempting to secure Nations League promotion. A win would do the job.
Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie is the man preferred in today’s lineup, despite a pretty poor showing off the bench against Serbia on Thursday night.
Stylistically, McBurnie is closer to Dykes in Clarke’s Scotland system than Griffiths, but some fans are still annoyed that the Celtic man hasn’t been given his big opportunity.
Griffiths has scored three goals in his last five games for Celtic since returning to the fold in October. His finishing ability is arguably greater than anyone else in the national team set-up.
The striker’s chance could come away to Israel on Wednesday night, especially if Scotland manage to beat Slovakia tonight and put the Nations League to bed.
McBurnie meanwhile will be hoping to silence his critics.
High profile pundits such as Michael Stewart have already labelled him as ‘not good enough’.
Hopefully, at the very least, Griffiths gets substantial minutes off the bench today.
