Mohamed Elyounoussi may have played in the Champions League and in the Premier League. But no atmosphere in football has impressed him like the one experience in the recent Europa League match against Cluj.
The Cluj game has been the highlight of Elyounoussi’s time at Celtic so far. He scored his first goal for the Hoops in the 2-0 win.
The atmosphere he experienced at Celtic Park greatly impressed him, as he explained to Nettavisen.
“I’ve played in the Champions League and Premier League, but I can’t compare it to the atmosphere at Celtic Park, I have to say that honestly” he said.
“How good it is”
“That’s what surprised me, how good it is” he concluded.
That is high praise indeed for a player who has played in some big stadiums in England and in Europe. However, it has been said that Celtic Park is a special place. Already it seems that Elyounoussi has fallen under the spell of a special stadium.
It does help though that Elyounoussi scored for the Hoops in his European debut for the Hoops. That might also be a reason that he enjoyed the night so much.
Could European nights influence player’s future?
Perhaps the influence of that might and the Europa League games to come will have an impact on the player’s future.
He is only at Celtic on loan from Southampton until the end of the season. He signed for the Saints for £16 million from Basel in 2018, but failed to hold down a regular first-team place. However, maybe the European nights he has experienced at Celtic will make the player want to stay at the club for longer.
That will be down to Celtic and Southampton to sort out, though. Hopefully he can be part of more good Celtic memories before the end of the season no matter where he ends up playing next season.
