Mohanad Jeahze speaks out on transfer saga as Celtic look set to sign Alexandro Bernabei

Hammarby left-back Mohanad Jeahze has stated that he expects to stay in Sweden for another year as Celtic appear to be closing in on Alexandro Bernabei.

Jeahze was thought to be the left-back Ange Postecoglou was looking for after the Scottish Sun claimed he was set to sign for the Hoops as far back as mid-May. However, despite reports in Sweden claiming Celtic had scouted the Iraqi international in person [Expressen], nothing would come of it.

Over the last month, reports on that story have dried up with Celtic instead appearing to be closing in on the signing of Bernabei from Lanus [The Herald].

And Jeahze has now admitted that he expects to stay in Sweden beyond the summer window despite stating a bid had been rejected from an unnamed club for his services. As quoted by Aftonbladet, the defender said: “I think I will stay at Hammarby. I have a contract for another year. I’m fully set on that now, and Jeppe [sporting director] has said no to something too. Jeppe said no. You simply have to accept it. It may not have been enough for them [Hammarby]. We’re at the top [of the league]. It would have been a different matter if we were in the middle, it might have been heavier. Now there are no problems.

“Yes [the bid was concrete]. But that was not enough for any of us. Neither me nor Hammarby. It was a good team. Maybe I was not so hungry for it – I have patience. Maybe something else will come this summer.

It is clear that I want to go abroad at some point. Everyone has a dream of trying something new. But I love Bajen [Hammarby] and how Jeppe Jansson wants to take the club forward. I want to go abroad and test myself but we play good football with Marti [Cifuentes, Hammarby’s manager].”

Mohanad Jeahze to Celtic now looks highly unlikely

It’s interesting that Jeahze states how a club had a bid rejected for his services. Troyes from France were the only other side reportedly keen on the player [Fotboll Direkt].

We’re quite right to ponder whether the club that came in with the offer was indeed Celtic. Especially considering there were figures being bandied around several weeks ago. There was a period where this transfer looked almost certain. So it would hardly be surprising if it was indeed the Hoops that tried their luck.

Make no mistake, Celtic could almost certainly have easily afforded Jeahze. Reports on the player’s valuation were peaking at around the £2m mark [Scottish Sun].

Instead, we’ve decided to make our move for Bernabei which appears set to be completed in the coming days. If Celtic did leave the table with regards to Jeahze negotiations, it would likely be because they didn’t feel he was worth the fee Hammarby wanted. Not because it wasn’t feasible for us to do.

Regardless, what’s been a pleasure to see is the speed in which Celtic have been carrying out their transfer work this summer. We’ve not even started back in pre-season and we look close to having secured 4 summer deals already.

Next up looks to be Bernabei and Jota. You can sense the anticipation as the Celtic support awaits more announcements this week.
