Ange Postecoglou spoke back in the summer about wanting to end the youth exodus that appeared to be growing arms and legs at Lennoxtown.

And today, it’s been revealed in a report from Football Scotland that another could be away in 15-year-old talent Rory Mahady.

The report claims that Manchester City are keeping tabs on the Scotland under-16 international and that the Etihad club have had Rory watched on several occasions in the past.

Should he sign for the English outfit, he would join the elite development squad at City. Mahady is said to be considered a top talent by the Parkhead club, the report states. It remains to be seen whether anything comes of the speculation .

However, Celtic have grown used to their talented youngsters being poached by English clubs. Josh Adam left the Hoops for City last year, whilst other high-profile departures have included Liam Morrison and Barry Hepburn to Bayern, Liam Hughes to Liverpool, Vincent Angelini to Watford, and Cammy Harper to New York Red Bulls respectively.

Not to mention Armstrong Okoflex left for West Ham in the summer. Karamoko Dembele is also into the final year of his contract and will likely have clubs sniffing.

Ange Postecoglou wants to end the Celtic youth exodus

Speaking about this particularly concerning issue back in June in an event with fan media, Ange said: “In terms of young players, I’ve already said I just think it’s so important that, one, we’re able to dentify the best young talent. Two, to give them the opportunity. And three, to keep them at our football club.

“It’s the best possible story if you can grab a kid off the terrace who’s eight or nine years old with a Celtic scarf and see him run out here as a senior player one day. Because that means that everybody in that stadium knows his journey. So it’s a massive part of, again, what I’ll be focusing on.”

Postecoglou made it clear then that Celtic need to make themselves an attractive proposition for youngsters to want to stay. Too many of our top talents view a move away from Parkhead as the best possible decision for their long-term futures.

It’s not as if they’re only going to EPL clubs either. We’ve had youngsters leave us for Germany and the USA too. It’s clear that the lack of a pathway from development team to senior team is a big issue that needs to be addressed.

The proof will be in the pudding when it comes to this particular issue. The more talents we see making the step-up into the senior ranks will help massively. A slower rate of young player departures will also tell us how much progress we’ve made in halting the trend.

But for now, reports of Mahady leaving for Manchester bring a spotlight back onto the issue of hanging onto our top youngsters. Fingers crossed Celtic can do that with the young goalkeeper.
