Celtic star Moritz Bauers’ delight at beating Rangers was clear to see, and the player himself believes everyone wanted the Hoops to lose.

There were some wild predictions ahead of the contest about just what the scoreline would be. Considering Rangers had won three out of three heading into the match, some journalists got a little excited. In the Daily Record’s predictions for the game, there was even a 4-0 to Rangers prediction from Mark McDougall

There was certainly some over-excitement from the media and Ibrox regarding the game. Considering Celtic put in two disastrous performances at Ibrox last season, you could see the thinking.

However, speaking at his press conference yesterday, Bauer stated his delight at shutting the critics up.

“I think these derbies are for the fans. I don’t know exactly the rules in Scotland – I think for this game you only get three points, you don’t get six points for it!

“It’s an important win. We wanted to start the season really well. Obviously it’s great because we were a bit under pressure, the media put pressure on us. It’s another win for us, but for the fans it’s great to give them the first derby win of the season.

“I feel that for the Glasgow derby everyone wished that we maybe lose. They made a bit of pressure. For us it was really important because people were a bit unsure before the derby.”

Moritz Bauer and Celtic answered their critics

Credit to the Austrian for what was a fine debut performance at Ibrox. He only got the last 25 minutes or so of the seasond half, but even so, it wasn’t an easy environment to be thrust into.

Bauer, however, is spot on with his comments. There was a clear excitement from the media and Rangers fans over how that game was going to go. But there were also concerns amongst the Celtic support that things could go wrong too.

It all stemmed from the Cluj defeat at Celtic Park. That was and still remains a  nasty blow to the club. The display in that contest sucked massive levels of confidence out of the supporters. It was always going to take a meteoric level of performance to win that back.

But in fairness to Celtic, that’s what they produced. Despite Steven Gerrard’s side getting plenty of praise so far this season, it’s Celtic who sit top of the Premiership table with a three-point lead.

The Celtic players must’ve had added motivation from some of the nonsense that was out there pre-match. They looked like a side who were angry and determined to show their rivals what they were all about.

And the display has brought back so much of the confidence that was lost against Cluj. Now, it’s all about consistency, and we’re about to find out if this Celtic side has just that.
