Motherwell boss clears up Declan Gallagher's contract situation after 2021 Celtic rumours
Motherwell manager Graham Alexander has cleared up any confusion surrounding Declan Gallagher’s contract after rumours linking him to Celtic in recent months.
Gallagher was reported back in early January to be “desperate” for a move to Celtic this summer [Daily Record]. The reports also claimed that a potential clause in his Motherwell contract could’ve led to him failing to bag a summer move.
This was to do with the idea that, had Gallagher played a certain number of games, he would’ve triggered a one-year extension. Since the speculation, the centre-back has featured seven more times for the Steelmen. Therefore, going by earlier reports, he would’ve passed threshold for any potential extension.
But Motherwell boss Alexander has cleared everything up, and confirmed that Gallagher can still leave for free in the summer regardless of how many games he plays. As quoted by the Daily Record, Alexander said:
“Under contract until the summer”
“Declan is under contract until the summer, that’s what it is is, and after that we take it from there. I think there was something at the start of the season that I wasn’t privy to and when I came in [as manager] it was about keeping him here until the summer and having another conversation with him – and that hasn’t changed.
“He is out of contract in the summer and he is free to play without that changing his future. When the time is right, if he wants to have a conversation with us then we are open to doing that, but in January when I last spoke to him about this it was very much up in the air.
“So we just asked him if he would still be here after January, how committed would he’d be and he was fully committed – and that’s all I’ve seen. He’s fully committed to doing his best for Motherwell. Dec has proved over the last 18-20 months for Motherwell and every club would benefit from having him in the squad.”
Motherwell centre-back Declan Gallagher may feel he has unfinished business at Celtic
Gallagher, of course, came through the youth ranks at Parkhead before being released. It’s from that moment he carved out his senior career – a path that’s led to him playing from the bottom rung in Scottish football to the highest.
Gallagher has also become a regular at international level with Steve Clarke’s Scotland. It’s looking likely he’ll be on the plane to Euro 2020 should he stay injury-free too. He’s the definition of a player who’s had to work for everything he’s achieved.
Of course, even though there have been reports of Gallagher wanting a Celtic move, he won’t be the only one. There also haven’t been any further updates on whether Celtic are actually keen on the player himself.
With a new regime change at Celtic, a move to Parkhead for the Motherwell man looks even more doubtful. Even if Celtic need defensive reinforcements, you would imagine any new manager will arrive with his own targets in mind. At 30, this would, you imagine, be his final opportunity to bag a move to Parkhead.
It’s the perfect story if it was to come about. But there are question marks over whether he would substantially improve our backline over the course of a season. This is an area we need to seriously invest in over the summer. Even if Gallagher can be picked up for nothing, there’s no guarantee he’ll be of the standard required.
But it’s there for Celtic if they want to do it. Hopefully we can get our new managerial regime in place soon. We need to start getting to work on the summer window ahead of us.
